The Brain and Physiology

What is physiology? Basically it's how the body works. The brain, bones and kidneys, that sort of thing. Physiology is about function, or "how things work", while anatomy is about structure, or "what connects to what". My speciality is the heart, but I have rather broader interests now. A recurring theme in physiology is electrical activity in the body, whether you are measuring the voltages of the electrocardiogram (ECG or EKG) or the infinitesimally small electrical currents flowing through molecules called ion channels that control whether the cells in the heart are active and will beat.

As expected, Paxman was gently pulling my chain, although not nearly so much he did to the sports psychologist Andy Barton, who was also being interviewed.
